My Story

Being part of the statistics for teenage pregnancy was not easy. Many who I thought cared about me gave up on me. That period in my life as a mother who dropped out of school was traumatic. I recall experiencing frequent nightmares and irregular sleep patterns. However, that marked the beginning of my journey as a change agent to have a positive outcome as I was determined to persevere.

Returning to school while caring for a baby and managing a home was incredibly challenging, but I persevered. At that stage in my life, I was living in Jamaica where resources were limited. However, my determination was evident to others, and they rallied around me with scholarships. Thanks to their support, I was able to complete Teacher College.

I provided exceptional services as an Educator with individualized teaching to children with various diagnoses, including autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, anxiety, and depression. The expertise I gained in teaching was foundational to my clinical skills. Parents often confided in me about their struggles to effectively care for their children, and their distress was palpable. I desired to be more knowledgeable and well-rounded to help others more meaningfully.

With that goal in mind, I began my training in Nursing when I migrated to the U.S., which was challenging because I had to retake the core classes, despite having credentials as a Teacher. I pursued a dual program at Union County Community College and Kean University for my clinical education. Subsequently, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Chamberlain University. Continuing my educational journey, I obtained my Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University, and I am currently pursuing my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Herzing University.

I commenced my clinical career at the pandemic’s peak, working at a Level 1 Trauma hospital in New Jersey. The demand for mental health services skyrocketed, and I fearlessly answered the call. Later, I transitioned into the role of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner where I am treating the whole person with more autonomy.

I understand that each person has their own preferences when it comes to treatment. Some may prefer alternative therapies, while others may only want to use medication for a short period of time. That’s why I make it a point to explore different approaches to care, ensuring that I can address all aspects of my patients’ needs. I believe in treating the whole person, not just managing symptoms with medication, so I strive to provide integrated and personalized care.
